Major Airports in Miami

  • Miami International Airport (MIA) – This airport is the largest in the city of Miami. It is located about nine miles northwest of Miami, and is in close distance to a variety of Miami hotels and beaches. The airport hosts all major airlines and does allow for direct flights to most destinations. However, this is considered the third busiest airport in the United States so there is a lot of foot traffic in and out of the airport at all times. It can be a bit difficult to navigate through this airport, but the U.S. Customs and Border Protection here has had many recent changes that have led to a more efficient process of getting through.
  • Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) – This airport is about 27 miles north of Miami, leading to a 40-minute drive that greatly depends on traffic conditions during the time of travel. While it is considered much less crowded than the Miami International Airport, it does have fewer choices when it comes to airlines and direct flights.
  • Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) – The Palm Beach International Airport is located much further north than the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport. It is about 65 miles north of Miami and can take up to two hours to get to Miami depending on traffic conditions during the time of travel. It is a bit smaller than the two other major airports, but there is considerably less traffic and it is much easier to get in and out. Most major airlines are available here and offer direct flights to most parts of the country.
